This blog post will guide you through the process of designing a Shopify store, step-by-step. Even if you’ve never built or designed a Shopify store before, this guide will make the process much easier.

We’ll cover everything you need to know about using the Shopify editor to build and customize your store so it looks great.

Signing Up for Shopify

  1. Begin by heading to the Shopify website and signing up for a free trial. This will give you three months to get your store up and running before you need to commit to a paid plan.
  2. Once you’ve entered your email address and clicked on “Start free trial,” Shopify will ask you a few questions about your business. You can answer these questions or skip this step entirely.
  3. Create your Shopify account using your email address, Apple, Facebook, or Google account.
  4. After creating your account, you’ll be taken to the Shopify dashboard. Here, you can activate the extended three-month trial by clicking on the black box in the bottom right corner and selecting “Select a plan.”
  5. Choose the “Basic Shopify” plan, which is sufficient for most beginners. Confirm the billing cycle (monthly or yearly) and enter your business address and payment method. Click on “Subscribe” to activate your extended trial.

Choosing a Theme

  1. Now that your trial is activated, you can start designing your store. The first step is to choose a theme.
  2. Head to “Online Store” and then “Themes” in your Shopify dashboard. This will take you to the theme library.
  3. You can browse the free and paid themes offered by Shopify. Consider the look and feel you want for your store when choosing a theme.
  4. If you’re just starting out, a free theme is a good option. To preview a theme, click on the theme and then “View demo store.”
  5. Once you’ve found a theme you like, click on “Try theme” to install it on your store.

Customizing Your Store

  1. In this blog post, we’ll be using the Dawn theme, one of Shopify’s best free themes. To switch back to the Dawn theme, click on “Publish” for the Dawn theme and confirm.
  2. Now you can start customizing your store by clicking on “Customize.” This will take you into the Shopify editor.
  3. The editor allows you to customize every page of your store. You can see a list of all the pages on the left side of the editor.
  4. Each page on your store is built out of sections, which contain different elements. For example, the homepage might have a banner section, a product collection section, and a text section.
  5. You can add, remove, and edit sections using the drag-and-drop functionality and the menu on the left side of the editor.

Adding a Slideshow

  1. Let’s add a slideshow to the top of the homepage. Many stores, especially fashion stores, use slideshows to showcase their products.
  2. You can use the existing image banner section and add one image, or you can delete the section and add a slideshow section.
  3. Drag and drop the images you want to use in the slideshow into the designated field. Once uploaded, select the first image and click “Done.”
  4. On the left side of the editor, you can see how many slides you have. You can add more slides by clicking on “Add Slide.”
  5. Edit the content of each slide, such as the text, button text, and button link. You can also change the style of each slide using the editing options provided.

Adding Featured Products

  1. The next section we’ll add will feature a few of your products. This is a great way to showcase your best sellers, new arrivals, or any other products you want to highlight.
  2. Click on “Add section” and choose the “Featured product” section.
  3. Important: You’ll need to add products to your Shopify store before you can feature them on the homepage. We’ll cover how to do this next.

Adding Products to a Featured Collection

  1. Now that you’ve added products, you can go back to customizing your theme and edit the featured product section.
  2. Click on the “Collection” dropdown menu and choose “Create a new collection.”
  3. Give your collection a name and description. Choose whether you want the collection to be automated or manual.
  • Automated collections will automatically include products that meet certain criteria, such as tags or inventory levels.

  2. In the Shopify editor, click on “Navigation.” Here, you can edit the menu items and links.
  3. You can add new menu items, delete existing items, and change the order of the items.
  4. Once you’re happy with the navigation menu, click “Save.”

Adding a Contact Form

  1. It’s important to make it easy for customers to contact you. Let’s add a contact form to your store.
  2. In the Shopify editor, click on “Add section” and choose the “Contact form” section.
  3. You can edit the text on the form, such as the title and the submit button text.
  4. Click “Save” to publish your changes.

Previewing and Publishing Your Store

  1. Once you’ve finished customizing your store, you can preview it on desktop and mobile devices before publishing it to the live site.
  2. Click on the downward-facing arrow next to “Publish” and select “View.” This will allow you to preview your store on a new window.
  3. Once you’re happy with how your store looks, click on “Publish” to make it live on the internet.
